Marie Banu is the Director of Director at the Centre for Social Initiative and Management (CSIM)  in Chennai where she plays a pivotal role in driving social initiatives and management practices. She is also the Director of Social Audit Network, UK (SAN,UK), a not-for-profit organisation based in the UK which facilitates the exchange of information and experience between practitioners of social accounting and audit in the social economy and voluntary sectors. She has recently authored a Guide on Social Impact Assessment which has been published by Social Audit Network UK.

As a member of the Institute of Social Auditors of India and a recipient of Social Auditor certification from the National Institute of Securities Market (NISM), she exemplifies her dedication to the field. She has also obtained accreditation as an SROI (Social Return on Investment) and Social Value Trainer from Social Value International. Further, she serves as a member of the Global CSR & Philanthropy Committee of the Della Leaders Club  the world's first business platform.


Education and Training

With a Master's degree in Business Administration and Human Resource Management, along with a Post Graduate Diploma in Computer Applications, Marie possesses a solid academic foundation. Her expertise extends to multiple domains, and she has authored several books and research publications. Additionally, she excels as a trainer in areas such as Social Accounting & Audit, Social Impact Assessment, Communication & Fundraising, and Social Entrepreneurship.

She has attended the Master Class in Social Accounting and Audit conducted by Mr. Patrick Boase and Mr. Alan Kay of Social Audit Network, UK and was mentored by Mr. Mike Swain of SAN, UK and Mrs. Latha Suresh of Social Audit Network, India . She has been trained in Social Return on Investment by Dr. Adam Richards of Social Value International.


Journey in Social Sector

Throughout her career, Marie has worked with renowned organizations such as DANIDA (Danish International Development Agency), OXFAM InternationalOXFAM IndiaActionAid India, among others. From 1999 to 2005, she led fundraising efforts for OXFAM India and managed international and national media relations for OXFAM International's South Asia Tsunami response program, in collaboration with various OXFAM affiliates worldwide.


POSH Committee and other memberships

Marie Banu holds various important roles in addressing grievances and promoting a safe environment in educational institutions and organizations in Chennai. She is an active member of the Staff Grievance Redressal Cell at Loyola College and the Anti-sexual Harassment Cell at SSS Shasun Jain College. Additionally, Marie Banu serves as a valued member of the Board of Studies in the Department of Sociology at Stella Maris College and the Madras School of Social Work.
Marie Banu's expertise and dedication extend beyond her primary affiliations.

She is recognized as a visiting faculty member at Loyola College, MSSW (Madras School of Social Work), and other esteemed educational institutions. Moreover, Marie Banu assumes the important role of being a Regional Complaints Committee member (RCC) or Internal Complaints Committee member (ICC) for POSH (Prevention of Sexual Harassment at the Workplace) in leading organizations. Her involvement in these committees is in accordance with clause (c) of Sub Section (2) of Section 4 of the Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prosecution, Prohibition, and Redressal) Act, 2013. Notably, Marie Banu is committed to adopting a gender-neutral approach in her work, emphasizing fairness and equality.


Awards & recognition

Marie's outstanding contributions to society have earned her prestigious recognition, including the REX Karmaveer Global Fellowship 2014-15 and the Karmaveer Chakra Award. The latter is a global civilian honour presented by the international confederation of NGOs (iCONGO) in partnership with the United Nations.
